News: The world's first whisky-powered car
Too good not to pass on.... Just received a press release about a company called Celtic
Renewables, an Edinburgh-based biofuel company, that has just has signed an agreement with a biotechnology pilot facility that will help it move a step closer to creating the world's first whisky-powered car.
Well, it's actually more likely to use whisky by-products than whisky itself, which is probably a good thing. The scheme has just been granted funding of £1.2m (including more than £800k from the UK Government), to help meet its ambition of growing "a new £100 million-a-year industry in the UK".
Celtic Renewables has apparently already proved the concept of producing biobutanol from draff (the sugar-rich kernels of barley which are soaked in water to facilitate the fermentation process necessary for whisky production) and pot ale (the yeasty liquid that is heated during distillation).
